Spring skiing begins today, theoretically, with clear skies and mountain highs in the upper 30s. If sunshine is your desire, ski in the morning. An approaching cold front drives clouds over the mountain by afternoon. And then... temperatures fall and snow returns, with several inches of wet new snow landing on Meadows overnight. I know we all keep thinking we’ve had the last powder day, but this one really is the last. Maybe... Actually, I'm not sure we can call this powder, but it's going to be new snow to slide the skis through. If nothing else, we’re definitely going to see spring skiing, the real deal, this weekend, with mountain highs in the fifties.
Your best chance for windsurfing and kiting in the next few days is in the desert late tomorrow, after the snow-producing front passes. Gusty 22-26 is the call, way out east, mid to late afternoon.
Mountain bikers, ride the trails today, because we’re looking at up to an inch of rain tonight. That much water will drench already drenched trails, so plan on something else tomorrow... like skiing.Once again, please don't bring your dog to Hospital Hill, and please don't park at Spring Street until the Kreps have moved all the cows. Respect the landowners, and they will tolerate you riding all over their property. =)
Come Saturday, valley highs climb into the seventies, drying trails and roads. Light winds disappoint windsurfers and kiteboarders, but road bikers are going to be happy.
Coming up this weekend, we have the Columbia Gorge Earth Center’s super-commuter freestyle bike race on Saturday. You’ll scout and scavenge your way through checkpoints. Costumes are encouraged and helmets are mandatory. Register online at cgec.org. Also on Saturday is your chance to give back to the dirt with a Post Canyon work party. 9 am at the bottom of the gravel road. There's nothing like riding a rad new section of trail that you built with backbreaking labor. Get up there on Saturday and help make your trail better!
Have an awesome day today!
