2/8

I know that's not a very exciting post title. It's 5:30 in the morning, and I've just recorded the Mt. Hood Meadows snow phones. I have to say that it's not that much fun writing a forecast that includes disclaimers such as "if the snow level drops fast enough" and "if we're lucky". Why can't it just start snowing on the mountain? Why? Why? Why?

My point is this. A cold front slips into the Oregon this afternoon/evening, bringing some moisture. It looks like the bulk of the system will miss us, tracking over the OR/CA border instead. Because of this, I'm saying 2-4" in the mountains tonight. NOAA says 3-7", but I think they'll downgrade.

All of next week looks cold and damp. However, at this point models suggest the storms will track along the coast, giving tons of snow to the coast range and less snow to the Cascades. Offshore flow combined with this strange storm track will keep snow levels low in the Gorge... keep your fingers crossed ... if it snows here, it's not going to be enough for Gorge backcountry skiing. It's just going to be enough to mess up the roads and make the hills look pretty.

For what it's worth, it does look like the protective high pressure system will finally break down tonight, giving us a more wintry weather pattern.

Think snow... on the mountain...

And have a great day!
